Back in 1998, Hall Newbegin decided to bring the experience of scent from the forested trails & pitted deserts into the form of wild harvested perfumes. In the early life of this wonderful ambition which became Juniper Ridge, Hall was just selling at local markets & pop-up shops on the West & East coasts. He & his team of backpackers & wild crafters have become the modern pioneers behind truth in fragrance & sensory experiences. Like seriously, I just hope one day I'll be invited along to harvest with them for some field lab projects. I'm holding you to it Hall.
As a hiker & backpacker, I wouldn't come across to many as a guy who would really care about their scent or fragrance. That would be a correct assumption, I never need a scent to mask the perfect aromatics or taste that the wilderness holds tight. I have never found the interest in smelling like a mall kiosk while in the mountains or at the shitty whiskey bar in town. But I definitely am into the idea of having the fragrance of spring pines, ancient conifers, campfires & mossy trail scent notes lingering around me well after I've departed from the timberline.
"Nature is not a place to visit, it is home."
Juniper Ridge bottles experiences & adventures, when I first got a bottle of "Winter Redwood" Backpacker Cologne over a year ago. I was so genuinely surprised that they were able to make this essential oil based fragrance to recreate the surreal depth that a hike or camping trip in the forest can do for all our human senses & spirit. I then looked into their process, which lead me into the direction of their "Harvesting Stories", where they go on backpacking missions in specific mountain fed forests & deep dry deserts on the West coast (each scent becomes named after that specific place harvested: ex. Big Sur, Mojave, Cascade Glacier, Siskiyou, Topanga Canyon). They harvest these organic ingredients which they have been able to make into a vast amount of different items. Including Backpacker cologne, Trail Resin cologne, Denim Wash, Body Wash, Beard Oil, Cabin Spray, Deodorant, Tea Bags, Incense & Smudge Sticks, & most recently an organic Wilderness Candle. Yes, a candle made completely from wild harvested botanical ingredients.
The forests can be a richer experience with the mind conscious of the scent surrounding you, Juniper Ridge has proved that to be true to me & many others. This experience is available to all folks who appreciate real fragrances in this inspiring wild country. Keep a tin of Resin cologne or Backpacker cologne in your back pocket or your daypack, & if your stuck in an office... well then just keep it on your desk to keep your mind on the trails that await for you once your shift has ended.
Thanks to Hall, Obi & the rest of the JR team & staff that provided all of the images for this journal entry & of course, the inspiration. To find out more & to purchase Juniper Ridge goods, make sure to checkout their beautiful new website. Cheers folks!
